Volunteer for Shout

Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. They are incredible, empathetic people who have taken 2.5 million conversations with 830,000 people who are anxious, stressed, depressed or suicidal and who need immediate support.


Interested in joining the community?

As a Shout Volunteer, you will take text conversations with children, young people and adults who are struggling to cope.

You will be supported by Clinical Supervisors as you work to take someone in distress to a calmer moment, empowering them to take their next steps towards feeling better. You'll also have everything you need to signpost texters towards further support. 

Volunteering for Shout can be challenging you will have text conversations with people in mental health health crisis, many with suicidal thoughts. It's also incredibly rewarding, teaching you new skills you can use in all areas of life.

Being a Shout Volunteer isn’t for everyone. You must:

  • Be over 18

  • Be resilient and mentally robust to help people in distress

  • Commit to 25 hours of online training and then fulfil 200 total hours of volunteering

  • Have empathy and be able to be objective

  • Put your own personal views to one side to help the texter

  • Have a secure web connection, laptop/computer and access to a quiet place

  • Be able to volunteer from the UK or New Zealand

  • Provide two referees and consent to undergo a background check
